With PS5 Sales Booming, Sony Was AMD’s Biggest Customer Last Year

The last couple of years saw the PS5’s supply line being throttled by a global chip shortage, but recent months have seen supply shortages easing up, and sure enough, 2022 saw an uptick on that front, in spite of the fact that it was only in the very late stages of the year that the situation improved. In fact, Sony ramped up manufacturing to the extent that it was AMD’s biggest customer across all of 2022. The same was revealed by AMD in a recent SEC filing (spotted by Tom’s Hardware), confirming that it sols roughly $3.776 billion worth of chips, accounting for 16% of the company’s revenue for the entire year, and making Sony AMD’s biggest customer for the tracked period. Recently, Sony revealed that the PS5 has shipped over 32.1 million units worldwide, and with the chip shortage having eased up and the company reportedly planning to ramp up shipments even further, one would imagine that that number will continue to go up for the foreseeable future. Microsoft also uses AMD’s SoCs in Xbox Series X/S consoles. A recent analyst estimate puts the console duo’s current worldwide shipments at 18.5 million units.
